DIY - Shirt to Cardigan

So this is a totally new experience for me, having never had any sort of blog before, so please bear with me and my awkwardness as I (attempt to) figure out this thing! Thank you! (:

Having warned you, I'll begin my first blog post/DIY (rather tentatively)!

Since this is the first of hopefully many blogs that I will be posting; on anything from crafting, sewing, photography, or jewelry making, I really hope you enjoy.

Here we go!

So today I pulled out a shirt that I have had for a bit but have never really worn because it never felt like it fit quite right. Too short, too tight, too square. It was a simple animal print, 3/4 length sleeve, shirt. I had considered throwing it out a few times but always felt like I would find a way to wear it that I would like.  Well thankfully, today I finally did.

Here is the shirt in question.

Simple, square, and (despite the pattern) a bit too solid. I think that is a pretty good word to describe how I felt about it.

So, I decided to use my sewing skills (and I use that term very loosely) to turn this unused shirt into a piece that I look forward to wearing!

First off, I found the very center of the shirt and cut all the way up the front of it.

So far so good, now i just needed to decide how to finish the hem. At first I considered sewing it so that the inside solid color would show along the seam, but decided against it since none of the rest of the shirt had any solid. You could always do it either way, I'm sure that with another pattern it may have turned out really well, but as it stands, I went with the patterned side out and I'm glad that I did!

After you decide which way works better for your piece, just pin along the seam. I double folded it (sorry, I know very little about sewing terminology so bear with my descriptions) so that the raw edges wouldn't show even if the shirt-turned-cardigan flipped open while wearing it.

Next, I sewed all along the pins! As I said before, I know very little about sewing other than what I have taught myself so I just guessed at a stitch that seemed like it would give a bit with the slight stretch of the material.

I chose a bit of a zigzag stitch and so far so good!

It's not as thick or as noticeable as any of the original seams, but I like the way it looks, barely there.

Voila!!

There you have it, my super simple way of turning a shirt that would have never been worn, into a cardigan that I LOVE and can wear with so many different outfits!

Hope you enjoyed my tutorial, if you have any questions about something I was not detailed enough about, (or maybe just plain left out!) then please let me know and I will do my best to help you!!! Thanks for reading!
